Refrigerator Repair

Refrigerator warm, leaking or suddenly loud? Best Pro repairs home refrigerators from San Francisco down the Peninsula to San Jose. A technician usually comes the same day you call, finds the cause in your kitchen and fixes most problems on that first visit.

Refrigerators we repair

We work on French door, side-by-side, top- and bottom-freezer, counter-depth and built-in refrigerators, along with their ice makers and water dispensers. In San Francisco that often means a narrow counter-depth model squeezed into a flat’s kitchen; on the Peninsula, a 36- or 48-inch built-in; in the South Bay, a second fridge in the garage. Brands include Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Maytag, Kenmore, Bosch, Electrolux, Amana and Miele. Built-in Sub-Zero units have their own page.

Local trouble spots

  • Garage refrigerators in a South Bay heat wave. A garage in San Jose or Sunnyvale can top 100°F in September. The compressor runs nonstop, the condenser coil can’t shed heat, and food in the main compartment warms up. A dusty coil or a slow condenser fan makes it worse.
  • After a power outage. PG&E sometimes cuts power in the hills around Woodside, Portola Valley and Emerald Hills. Afterwards some refrigerators come back with a blank display, a stuck defrost cycle or an ice maker that never restarts. A surge when the power returns can also take out a control board.
  • Water dispensers in the South Bay. San Francisco and much of the Peninsula drink soft Hetch Hetchy water, but parts of the South Bay get harder, blended groundwater. Mineral scale clogs inlet valves and dispenser lines faster there, and an old filter slows the dispenser to a trickle.

How a repair works

  1. Call or book online. Booking online saves you a few dollars. We confirm an arrival window, usually for the same day.
  2. Diagnosis in your kitchen. The technician tests the sealed system, fans, defrost parts, controls and door gaskets, explains what failed and quotes a flat price before any work begins.
  3. Repair and warranty. We replace the failed part and make sure the refrigerator is holding temperature before we leave. Parts and labor carry a 90-day warranty.

When it isn’t worth fixing

If the repair would cost more than the refrigerator is worth — a failed compressor on an older builder-grade model, for example — the technician says so before you pay for parts.

FAQ

Refrigerator Repair: common questions

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

The service call is $85, and it’s free if you go ahead with the repair. Labor runs $185 to $1,800. Most repairs — a fan motor, a defrost part, a water valve — sit at the low end; the top of the range is sealed-system work such as a new compressor.

Is my refrigerator worth fixing?

Usually, if it’s under about ten years old and the problem isn’t the compressor or the sealed system. Built-ins like Sub-Zero are almost always worth repairing. You get a flat price after the diagnostic, so you can compare it with a new refrigerator before deciding.

The freezer is cold but the refrigerator is warm. What’s wrong?

Most often the defrost system: frost has blocked the evaporator coil, so cold air can’t reach the fresh-food side. A failed evaporator fan or a stuck damper does the same. Turning the dial colder won’t fix it.
