An oven that won’t heat, scorches the bottom of every tray or stays locked after self-clean usually has one failed part. Best Pro repairs gas and electric wall ovens and range ovens, from the original wall oven in an Eichler kitchen to a new convection model in a Peninsula remodel.
Why ovens stop working
- Electric oven won’t heat. The bake or broil element is the most common culprit; a blister or a break is often visible. Hidden bake elements sit under the oven floor. If the elements test good, we move on to the temperature sensor, the control board relays and the thermal fuse.
- Gas oven won’t heat. Usually a tired igniter. It still glows, but it no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve, so the oven takes ages to light or never lights. Now and then the oven gas valve itself is the problem.
- Wrong temperature or uneven baking. A drifting sensor, a convection fan that has stopped, or a worn door gasket letting heat escape. We measure the real temperature inside the cavity instead of trusting the display.
- Self-clean trouble. Self-clean runs the cavity at roughly 800–900°F. That’s exactly when thermal fuses, control boards and door lock motors tend to give out, sometimes with the door locked shut. If the oven quit mid-clean, don’t force the door.
- Error codes. A code tells us which circuit to look at — sensor, door lock, control board — but not always which part failed, so we test before we replace.
Wall ovens in older Bay Area kitchens
Mid-century homes on the Peninsula and in the South Bay often have a built-in wall oven in a cabinet sized decades ago. Replacement ovens don’t always fit the opening, which makes repairing the one you have more attractive. We check whether parts are still available before quoting, and if they aren’t, we tell you right away.
What drives the price
An element or an igniter costs far less than a control board, and that accounts for most of the spread in the range below.
We repair Bosch, Kenmore, GE, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, Electrolux, Maytag and other brands. Two ovens in one cabinet? See double oven repair. Trouble with the burners on top? See range and stove repair. A microwave built in above the oven is covered under microwave and combo oven repair, and Wolf, Viking and Dacor ovens have their own pages: Wolf, Viking, Dacor.
