Sub-Zero is the refrigeration side of the Sub-Zero Group: built-in refrigerators, column refrigerators and freezers, wine storage and undercounter units, most of them with the condenser at the top of the cabinet instead of underneath. They’re everywhere in San Francisco remodels and Peninsula kitchens, and Best Pro repairs them from the city down to San Jose.

Why a Sub-Zero runs warm
- Dusty condenser at the top. The condenser and its fan sit behind the grille above the doors and pull room air across the coil. Dust there is the most common reason a Sub-Zero runs warm, and because it’s at eye level or above, it’s easy to forget. Homes near the coast also pick up a film of salt and fog moisture on the coil that holds dust.
- One side warm on a dual-compressor unit. Larger built-ins run separate sealed systems for the refrigerator and the freezer. One side can fail while the other keeps working, so “the freezer is fine but the fridge is warm” usually points to one compressor, fan or control — not the whole unit.
- Door not sealing. Sub-Zero relies on a magnetic gasket and a door that closes on its own. A torn or dirty gasket, or a door knocked out of alignment, lets warm air in all day.
Other common problems

- Ice maker not making ice. A clogged water filter, a failed inlet valve or an ice maker module fault. In parts of the South Bay with harder water, scale in the valve and the fill tube is a common cause.
- Air purification light. Some models run an internal air purifier with its own cartridge and fan; a fault there lights a separate indicator that has nothing to do with cooling.
- New noise. A top-mounted fan or compressor is easier to hear than a floor-level one. New rattling or grinding usually means a failing fan motor or a compressor mount.
- After a power outage. If a Sub-Zero shows an error or won’t cool after the power comes back, the control board may need a reset or a replacement.
What we check

The technician checks both sealed systems, the condenser and its fan, the door gaskets and alignment, the ice maker and the control board, and reads any stored error codes.
